Choose The Right Strapping Product

So you're looking for the right strapping based on your product and application, where do you start? There are all kinds of strapping out there: Polyester, polypropylene, steel, nylon, and of course tools. The physical package characteristics are an important piece to figure out which product is best for you. There are 3 to look out for corners, load integrity, and weight. This is a very important characteristic of selecting the right strap to use for your application. If you have a rigid load like steel blanks, it's unwise to use plastic strapping directly. Those sharp metal edges will just cut right through the plastic without edge protectors. Edge protectors keep the plastic or steel straps off the actual package so it doesn't cause damage.

Otherwise known as stability, this also affects the strap selection. Many times, loads are made from numerous packages that tend to separate. The best way to fix this is to unitize them with strapping. Straps provide the stability needed to help secure products. They also help keep them in solid, stackable loads.

Every piece of strap has a specific tensile strength or break strength, that's the stress at which it breaks or permanently disfigures. A good example of this is a 15,000 lb. load of steel products wouldn't be strapped with light-duty poly straps. That won't work, it's not going to hold and the break strength isn't enough to hold that load together. Another example would be the opposite; heavy-duty steel straps holding together fragile products. Chances are that the straps will just damage the product and not protect it.
